"Quintin rowed 37 and Kent School 38 in the first minute. Kent nearly hit the booms on their third stroke, but they gained a small lead up the Island, and were a few feet ahead at the first signal. The crews were level at the Barrier, in 2min 34 sec. Quintin then took a small lead, but Kent were level again at Fawley, reached in 4min 22sec. Although steering badly Kent took a slight lead, and after passing the Mile Post a quarter of a length ahead, they drew away along the Enclosure." [The Times]
