Wed 3 July | beat Molesey | 2½ L | 3.36 | 7.32
"Quintin were clear at Fawley and won by two and a half lengths" [HRR] "Quintin rowed 42 to Molesey's 38 in the first minute. Quintin went ahead at once and were clear at Fawley in 3min 36sec. Quintin continued to increase their lead" [The Times]
Thu 4 July | beat Twickenham | 5 feet | 3.34 | 7.37
"Quintin went off 43 to 38 and led by a length and a half at Fawley. From there Twickenham gained all the way and Quintin got home by only 5 feet." [HRR] "One of the finest races of the day was that between two of the best remaining English crews, Quintin and Twickenham. After being led by three-quarters of a length at the mile post the longer Twickenham crew steadily came up, but they were not quite well enough together, and Quintin, who are the longest of the Fairbairn crews in this event, excepting Thames, just won a splendid race" [The Times] "Quintin rowed 43 and Twickenham 38 in the first minute. Quintin went away fast, and led by a length at the first signal. They were clear at Fawley in 3min 34sec. Twickenham began to draw up from the mile post, Lansdown stroking them finely. In a great spurt, he just failed to get his crew home" [The Times]
Fri 5 July (QF) | beat Imperial College | 1 L | 2.21 | 4.03 | 8.48 |
"Quintin at 41 against 39 went away fast and had gained a length at the quarter-mile. From this point they held their advantage without variation to the finish." [HRR] "Imperial College rowed 11, 20, and 39 and Quintin 11, 22, 41 in the first quarter, half and full minute. Quintin led at once and were a length up at the first signal. They still held this lead at Fawley in 4min 3sec. Quintin kept their lead in the head wind and rough water" [The Times]
Sat 6 July (SF) | lost to Thames | easily by a length | 2.07* | 3.33* | 7.27 |
"Rowing at 43 against 38 Quintin led and were clear at Fawley, but Thames, rowing with greater length, gained gradually and passed them at the bottom of the Enclosures to win easily by a length." [HRR] "Quintin rowed 11, 22, and 43, and Thames 10½, 20, and 38 in the first quarter, half and full minute. Quintin drew ahead from the first stroke, and were a length up at the first signal, but at Fawley, reached in 3min 33sec, Thames had slightly reduced their lead. Thames, rowing longer, gradually gained and caught Quintin at the bottom of the Enclosure." [The Times] "Thames, after being led by a length at the first signal, rowed past Quintin, who had gone short, after the mile post" [The Times] "Quintin, against Thames, were as usual very fast off the mark and were the only crew who could row 45 per minute for a start and get great pace on their boat. The Thames men were slower and bided their time. At the halfway distance Quintin still held the advantage, which they hung on to until past the mile mark, when the Thames stroke took his opportunity and, spurting finely, passed Quintin and led them over the winning post by three-quarters of a length in 7m 27s. It was a well-timed effort and deserved the applause it got." [Almanack] "Quintin made the fatal mistake of trying to row too fast a stroke at the start." [Almanack] |
