Thu 2 July (QF) | lost to Tokyo Imperial University (Japan) | 2 L | 2.12 | 3.45 | 7.41 |
"Quintin went off at 41 to the 40 of Tokyo and the race was level past the Barrier, but the Japanese had half a length at Fawley. Below the mile, with a spurt at 50, Tokyo took a length. With another spurt at 56, the Japanese won by two lengths." [HRR] "Tokyo Imperial University had no difficulty in accounting for Quintin Boat Club" [The Times] "The real form of Tokyo Imperial University has yet to be disclosed, for yesterday in their heat with Quintin Boat Club they played a game of cat and mouse with their opponents. The race was rowed in a strong head wind and rainstorm, and the Japanese went off very slowly, for them, striking only 40 in the first minute, so that Quintin led away from the mark. However, it was only on sufferance, for when the Tokyo crew made one of their famous spurts, at 50, near Fawley, they quickly gained a length. Along the Enclosure they had another spurt, and won, without extending themselves, by two lengths." [The Times] "Quintin rowed 11, 22, and 41½ to 10, 20, and 40 by Tokyo in the first quarter, half, and full minute. Quintin showed ahead along the Island, but Tokyo soon came up and led by a few feet at the First Signal, but at the Barrier, reached in 2min 12 sec, Quintin were nearly level. At the Half-mile Post Tokyo led by half a length and they held the same lead at Fawley in 3min 45 sec. Quintin were allowed to come up a little, but Tokyo suddenly spurted up to 48 and gained a length, being 1½ length ahead at the Mile Post. Along the Enclosure Tokyo spurted up to over 50."
