"Quintin, with three of our Tokyo silver medal winners, must be well in the Stewards' running" [The Times, when reporting the entries]
"Quintin were outstanding. In their race on Friday, though not pressed by Thames, they equalled the Record to the Barrier and made a new Record to Fawley. On Saturday, though winning easily, they set up new Records to the Barrier, Fawley and the Finish. This is the first time that a Four has reached the Barrier in less than 2 minutes and the Finish in less than 7 minutes." [HRR]
(Two of the crew, James and Russell, had won the Stewards in a Tideway Scullers crew in 1964. Clay and Russell had won the Stewards with Molesey in 1963.)

Fri 2 July (SF) | beat Thames | 3¼ L | 2.02‡ | 3.24† | 7.25 |
"Quintin (3min 24 sec) lowered the Fawley record by three seconds and came home at a paddle to win from Thames. They must be today's most certain winners, and I believe that in Thursday's conditions they would have been near the seven-minute mark." [The Times] "Quintin, at 45 and then 38, led by 2½ lengths at the ¼ mile and 4 lengths at the barrier, where the time equalled the Record. They led by many lengths at Fawley where the time was a new Record. They dropped to 27, and later to 25, and held their lead." [HRR] | |||||
Sat 3 July (F) | beat Nautilus | easily | 1.59† | 3.22† | 6.55† |
See photograph. "With many people mesmerized by the apparent invincibility of foreign crews, it was a great pity that there was no worthwhile foreign competition in either the Prince Philip or the Stewards' Cups. For these British fours were fully up to anything we have seen, including the superb Russian fours of recent years. Quintin started at 50 and reached the Barrier in 1min 59sec. Virtually without opposition, through no fault of Nautilus, who tried gamely but were hopelessly outclassed, they went on to improve the course record by 6 sec to 6min 55sec." [The Times] "Quintin led by ½ length at the ¼ mile and drew right away to 1¼ lengths at the Barrier, 1½ lengths at Fawley and 3 lengths at the Mile. The times were new Records." [HRR] |
