The format of the match was to race side-by-side over 2000m. in eights, coxed fours, coxless pairs and single sculls. The match resulted in a Fiat victory in all events - we blamed all the food and drink we were plied with - that and the fact that Fiat were the foundation of the Italian national squad. Friday lunch alone took from 12 noon to 3pm. We were regally entertained at every meal and certainly drank too much Grappa on the Sunday night.
