In 1987 an exhibition was mounted on the site of three buildings that were the headquarters for the security service, the Gestapo and the SS during the Third Reich. This exhibition, the "Topographie des Terrors", tells the gruesome story of the rise and then the fall of Nazism, followed by the allied occupation and finally reunification. Along the street above the basement level of the exhibition remains a part of the Berlin Wall that has been left standing. Elsewhere its former position is marked by inlays in the road surface.
