Wed 1 July | beat Magdalen College, Oxford | ¾ L | 2.08 | 3.35 | 7.28 |
"Starting at 43 against 37 Quintin led by a third of a length at the Barrier, but Magdalen were nearly level before Fawley. Quintin drew away again, to win by three-quarters of a length." [HRR] "Magdalen rowed 37 and Quintin 43 in the first minute. Quintin led at once, but there was a good race to Fawley, which Quintin reached in 3min 35 sec, a few feet ahead. Quintin went away steadily." [The Times] (This was Magdalen's second eight. The first eight was in the Ladies.)
Thu 2 July | beat Walton | 1 Foot | 2.15* | 3.45* | 7.53 |
"Walton led from the start and had three-quarters of a length at Fawley. Quintin then went up steadily and caught them on the Post, to win by a foot." [HRR] "The closest race of the day was that between Quintin and Walton. Walton, who are one of the youngest clubs on the river, put up a very fine performance when they led the more experienced Quintin crew almost to the post. Had some members of the Walton crew kept their heads and not missed the water during the last few strokes, Walton might have been rowing to-day, but Quintin crept up on the post and won by a foot." [The Times] "Walton rowed 42 and Quintin 41 in the first minute. Walton led after 10 strokes and were three-quarters of a length up at Fawley, reached in 3min 45 sec. Quintin spurted and came up, but Walton still led at the bottom of the Enclosure. Both crews spurted for the post, Quintin securing the verdict by one foot" [The Times]
Fri 3 July (QF) | lost to Peterhouse, Cambridge | 1 L | 2.15* | 3.50 | 7.55 |
"Quintin led at 42 against 37 and gained half a length, but Peterhouse caught them before Fawley and won by one length." [HRR] "Peterhouse had just the same extra length and drive in comparison to Quintin as Clare had in comparison to Twickenham. Both crews were equally well together, and although Quintin were good enough to lead at the first two signals they could not hold the longer college crew over the second half." [The Times] "Quintin rowed 11½, 22, and 42 to 10, 19, and 37 by Peterhouse in the first quarter, half and full minute. Quintin led off at a higher rate of striking, and quickly gained a half length at the first signal. Quintin led by a canvas, but Peterhouse spurted, and led by a few feet at Fawley in 3min 50sec. Peterhouse continued to draw away, and, rowing with great judgement, they won by one length" [The Times] |
