"Quintin confirmed the opinion that they are one of the leading home crews in the Thames Cup, by covering the course in the evening in 6min 59sec, which beat the record time by seven seconds." [The Times, Mon 2 July, reporting Saturday practice]
"The competition for the Thames Cup is not of nearly such a high standard as last year. ... It seems virtually certain that Quintin, whom Kent [School] are unlucky enough to meet in the first heat, will win the event. The most serious competitors are the London second crew, who are improving rapidly since their change of order and are likely to meet Quintin on Friday. A Quintin victory would be a fine stimulus to Metropolitan rowing outside London and Thames. The crew are beautifully together and have great effective length" [The Times, Wed 4 July]
(The Quintin cox, Ken Hylton Smith, also coxed St Paul's School in the Ladies. HRR rules did not allow oarsmen to double up between the Thames Cup and the Ladies but allowed coxes to do so.)

Wed 4 July | beat Kent School (USA) | 2/3 L | 2.04 | 3.27 | 7.11 |
"The heat between Quintin Boat Club and Kent School, the American holders of the cup, might prove the virtual final; it was a thrilling race throughout. The English club took a slight lead after the crews had cleared Temple Island, but they were only half a length in front at Fawley. The Americans spurted up to 37, and for a moment Quintin faltered, Kent School drawing up to within quarter of a length. Quintin recovered after passing the Mile Post, and, finishing very strongly, won a splendid race by two-thirds of a length in 7min 11sec, which was the best time recorded in this event yesterday." [The Times] "The crews raced level up the Island and then Quintin showed ahead. They were a quarter-length up at the First Signal and half a length at Fawley on 3min 27 sec. Kent spurted near Remenham and gained slightly, for at the Mile Post Quintin were only a quarter-length ahead. There was a fine race along the Enclosure, but Quintin lasted the better." [The Times] "Quintin led all the way from the top of the Island, but never by more than half a length until the final spurt when they got away to win a fine race by two-thirds of a length." Thu 5 July | beat Jesus College, Cambridge | 2½ L | 2.03 | 3.27 | 7.08 |
See photograph above. "Quintin soon led but did not get clear till after the three-quarter mile, when they drew right away to win by two lengths and a half." [HRR] "Jesus College gave Quintin Boat Club, the favourites for this event, a good race over the first half of the course." [The Times] | |||||
Fri 6 July (QF) | lost to London | ½ L | 2.03 | 3.25 | 6.58† |
See photograph. "Though slower over the first half of the Course than the previous heat [in which Westminster Bank, in beating Isis by 6 feet, broke the records to Fawley and to the finish], a magnificent race was seen between London and Quintin in which both crews led in turn by a few feet all the way to the Enclosure, when London got away to win by half a length and beat the record made ten minutes earlier."
