Mark Chatwin Regains Club Sculling Crown

Club Sculls Prize Giving Photos

The club sculling championship took place this morning over the normal ebb tide course from the Pink House to the Club. The race started at approximately 10:15. Fifteen competitors made it to the start, many of them the wrong side of fifty, so well done you oldies for showing the youngsters how it's done. Mark Chatwin regained the club sculling crown he last held in 2011, while Tom Bishop confounded his opposition by finishing second overall and taking the Masters G-I prize. Relative youngster (just under 50) Dov Ohrenstein won the sealed handicap, pipping Mark by one second (well done handicapper!). Steve Aquilina won the prize for the 50-64 category.

At 12:00 noon sharp the club's annual general meeting was convened in the gymnasium, the clubroom currently being out of bounds owing to building works. Full minutes will be published in due course. The new committee for 2019-20 is as follows:

It's been a busy weekend! On Sunday Nick Ryan and Mark Russell took part in the RIchmond Marathon. Nick finished fourth in the men's 60-64 category in a time of 4:12:23 and Mark finished fifth in the same category in 4:18:06. Judging from the photographs they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but looks can be deceptive.

Some of our oarsmen have been putting in some extra racing at the end of the summer season, admittedly not in our club colours. As members of Isle of Wight-based Ryde Rowing Club, a coastal rowing club, Mark Chatwin and Mike Ewing joined Oliver Bottrell, Matthew Allsopp and cox Owen Barnaby to race on the River Dart for the Bideford Bowl, the trophy for the South Coast Championships. In a very exciting and eventful race, rowed in one of our gleaming Empacher coxed fours, the Ryde crew eventually crossed the line about ¼ length up on Exeter RC. With the trophy

Club member Steve Aquilina and sometime member Jock Wishart were in the fastest crew at this year’s Great River Race, run on the Thames from Greenwich to Ham. Competing in a 12-man Basque Trainera with skiffers from the Kingston area, their time of 2 hr. 2 min. 51 sec. was 7 min. 35 sec/ ahead of the next fastest crew and set a new record for the 21.6 mile course.

This is Jock’s third record this year, his Trainera crew having previously set new standards for rowing the Channel and the length of Loch Ness.

World Masters Photos

Tom Bishop has won ten events at this year's world masters regatta. In the men's events he won G 1 x and H 1x and in composite crews won G 2x, H 2x, H 4x, H 4- and H 8+. In the mixed events he won G 4x, F 2x and G 8+. He was also second in men's G 4x and G 4- and sculled in men's F 2x. Ian's funeral will be at Mortlake Crematorium on Friday 20th September from 12.40pm to 1.50pm and then at Mortlake Anglian & Alpha from 2pm. MAABC have kindly offered their facilities because the Quintin club room will be unusable during the refurbishment.

Because Ian didn't believe in dressing up, his widow, Tracy, has requested casual dress at the funeral. She has also requested no flowers. Instead, she asks that you donate to a cancer charity of your choice or to the collection that will be held at the end of the service.

Ian in south of France last September

Ian in the Barflies VIII 2014

We are sorry to announce the death yesterday morning of Ian Stephenson. He died peacefully with his wife Tracy at his side. He also leaves a pre-teenage son. As many of you know, he had been suffering from cancer for some time but had continued rowing as long as he could, until July this year. He had been an active member of Quintin's barflies squad for six years, having previously been at Cygnet. He started his rowing career at Cambois RC, in Northumberland, and had also rowed for Staines and for Curlew.

The photograph attached, with Ian on the left, was taken last September when he was "living it up" with Huw Jones and Richard Lonergan on the south coast of France.

On Thursday, 27th June sixteen teams from across the Tideway project took part in this year’s Oarsome Challenge – raising more than £34,000 for London Youth Rowing and Tideway’s three main charity partners. Now in its third year, the Challenge sees teams of eight rowers donning fancy dress and rowing a 13-mile stretch of the River Thames, going from Shadwell in the East, to Putney Bridge in the West, before a final sprint following the Boat Race course to the finish line at Chiswick Bridge and the Quintin Boat Club. QBC provided an open air bar on the lawn for a well-deserved end of Challenge celebration and prize giving.

Matt Rostron, CEO of London Youth Rowing said of the rowers: “You were just amazing. The level of enthusiasm, excitement, flexibility, desire to just get stuck in, love of fancy dress, your unending sense of humour and your ‘let’s do this thing’ attitude was a joy to be part of – thank you for getting involved and for doing what you did. You should all be very proud of what you did and the stat of the night for me was that the Oarsome Challenge series has raised over £100,000 for river charities like ours and help us to really help with Tideway's mission to re-connect London to the River Thames. That is unbelievable, thank you”.

Part of the money raised by the Oarsome Challenge will be used to purchase a new fixed seat rowing boat which will be operated by London Youth Rowing and other charities and used to encourage disadvantaged communities in the Fulham and Wandsworth areas to take up rowing.

Through Tideway’s community programme, the company works with several charities including Thames21, London Youth Rowing and other charitable organisations based near their sites, to help local communities deliver the benefits to their communities. Tideway staff volunteer their time to support these organisations and all this work is aimed at re-connecting Londoners with the River Thames.

Tideway, is responsible for delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel, preparatory work for which began in 2015 at 24 sites in London with work anticipated to be completed in 2024.

Boat Naming Photos

This Saturday saw the official naming of our new five-seater lake boat, the "Hugh Davy". On a morning of sunshine and showers a select group of club members and the Davy family gathered to carry out the formalities. Our president, John Peters, briefly described how Hugh, an ex-St. Paul's School pupil, had been enticed by the Madge family to join Quintin rather than the traditional St. Paul's haunt of Thanes RC. Hugh's widow then wet the bows of the boat with a small amount of bubbly and the rest was drunk by the assembled congregation.

Henley Masters Photos

(This report has been amended after receiving a bulletin from Tom Bishop)

The club had a substantial entry at Henley Masters Regatta, with crews in Women's Masters B double sculls, Masters H double sculls, Masters H quadruple sculls, Masters F coxless fours, Masters E eights and Masters G eights. Our "barflies", in the 'E' eights were first to race - indeed they were in the second race of the regatta at 9:04 on Friday morning. This was their first venture to Henley Masters and they found their pace unable to match local rivals Thames Tradesmens' RC, who beat them by 3¼ lengths in a time of 3 min. 30 sec.

Next to race on Friday was our Women's 'B' double scull of Beks Edgar and Lorna Cardwell. They had a stiff race against a Lea RC / Ulster composite, losing by two lengths with a winning time of 3 min. 54 sec. Tom Bishop and his doubles partner Charles Parry (Wallingford RC) fared better in the men's 'H' event. Their semi-final was a tough draw against Mossman RC from Australia. Tom and Charles settled to an unusually high rate (for them) of 34 and established a lead of a length but at about 750m Mossman pushed hard but then slowed and Tom and Charles eventually triumphed by 1¾ lengths in a time of 3 min. 56 sec. They admitted to each other afterwards that they were both nervous about this race as they had not had much water time this season and hadn't raced much.

Tom and Charles were back on duty again at 17:00, racing with Rod Stewart of Dart Totnes RC and Lee Brown of Upper Thames RC against a Guildford / Southsea / Eton Excelsior composite in a semi-final of 'H' quadruple sculls. There was a strong cross wind at the start, and the crews set off into the race for about twenty strokes only to find that the umpire's launch had been blown behind the stake boat and couldn't follow the race...and at that moment Lee Brown caught a boat-stopping crab and lost his sculls. Luckily the race was stopped and the crews had to go back and start again this time setting off successfully with the Quintin composite getting ahead of their opponents, achieving a comfortable win in 3 min. 33 sec. - the verdict - easily.

Our first race on Saturday was at 12:24, the semi-final of 'F' coxless fours, against the Swedish crew, Kungalvs Roddklubb & Mimers Gymnasium. Races are seldom easy at this level but our four gained the advantage and won by 1¼ lengths in a time of 3 min. 36 sec.

Twenty four minutes later Tom and Charles were competing in the final of 'H' double sculls. Here their opponents, a Guildford / Southsea composite (two out of the quad from Friday) were no match and Tom and Charles led by three lengths at the finish in a time of 4 min. 2 sec, covering the course at their normal race pace of 32.

Tom Bishop and Charles Parry were busy again at 14:12 in the final of 'H' quadruple sculls, accompanied by Rod Stewart and Lee Brown. This was against Fana Roklubb from Bergen in Norway and Tom chalked up his second win of the day with the English club composite beating the Norwegians by three lengths in a time of 3 min. 35 sec.

The 'F' coxless fours final was at 17:36, when our crew met a composite Walbrook/Kingston/London four with erstwhile Quintin oarsmen Jock Wishart and Andy Tompkins on board. This proved to be a crowd pleaser, with our oppo taking the lead off the start but then stroke Richard Lonergan responded, taking the rating back up to 40 to regain lost ground and take the lead. Our four then gradually increased their advantage but the Walbrook composite hung on to the finish, where the final margin was ¾ length to QBC in a time of 3 min. 26 sec.

The 'G' eights final was scheduled to be the last-but-one race of the day at 17:56 but in the end the women's 'G' eights went off first, leaving the men to close the regatta. Star Club masters had been having a good season, so we knew this race was going to be a tough one. Off the start there was nothing in it, but about a minute into the race the Star/Bedford composite could be seen to be edging ahead. By the time the crew reached the boating area, about halfway along the course, their lead was about half a length but then Quintin raised their game and were reducing the deficit every stroke. At the finish there was nothing in it but the finish judge had Star/Bedford one foot ahead. The official time was originally published as 3 min. 58 sec. but this has now been corrected to 3 min. 20 sec.

Thames Cup Photos

Both our Thames Cup eight and Wyfold Cup four had challenging races on the first day proper of this year's regatta. Both had drawn crews from Thames Rowing Club which were known to be of similar speed and, in the case of the four, had been selected by the stewards for seeding in the draw. Our eight, racing at 11:10 am were led early in the race but made a strong comeback to reduce the deficit to ¾ length at the finish.

In their race at 4:15 pm our four were always in contention, only briefly allowing Thames a length's lead around Remenham Club but mounted a strong challenge at the mile, reducing the deficit to ½ a length. Thames, with some wayward steering, responded along the enclosures and hung on to a ¾ length lead at the finish.

Our Thames Cup eight have drawn Thames RC 'B' in their first round heat and the Wyfold four have drawn Thames RC 'A', who are one of the selected crews. Their heats are on Wednesday, 3rd July and the eight races ar 11:10 am while the four's race is at 4:15 pm.

Our coxed four were the fastest crew not to qualify for the Britannia Challenge Cup. They completed the course in 7 min. 9.9 sec. Unfortunately our stroke man had been taken ill and, with a rearrangement of the rowing order, Mark Chatwin subbed in at 20 hours notice and with only one practice session.

It's that busy time of the year when some important races are just around the corner. On Friday our coxed four competes in the qualifying round of the Britannia Cup at Henley. This is a time trial over the full course. There are 19 crews required to qualify. Our crew goes off second in the second group of nine and the fastest four of the nineteen will qualify. The second group's time trial starts at 16:40 and all support on the bank would be very welcome.

Our Thames Cup eight and Wyfold Four compete in the regatta proper, starting next Wednesday, 3 July and we hope they will be joined by the Britannia four. The draw for all events at Henley will be made this Saturday, 29th June.

Not to be outdone, our masters are competing at Henley Masters Regatta the following weekend. We have an 'E' eight, an 'F' coxless four, a 'G' eight, an 'H' double scull and a women's 'B' double scull. Our 'E' eight have drawn, rather ironically, Thames Tradesmen's RC in the second race of the day on Friday, 12th July. The winners of this race meet a Star/Bedford composite in the quarter finals. A big entry in this event - ten crews. The exact time of our heat has yet to be published, but it is expected to be shortly after 9:00 hours.

Our 'F' coxless four have drawn Kungalvs Roddklubb & Mimers Gymnasium, Sweden in a semi-final of a four-boat entry. Their heat will be on Saturday, 13th July between 12:00 and 13:00. The winners take on San Diego Rowing Club, USA or a Kingston/London/Walbrook Composite in the final, some time after 17:00.

Our 'G' eight have a straight final against a Star/Bedford composite on the Saturday, timed between 17:00 and 18:00. This is traditionally the last race of the regatta.

Tom Bishop and his doubles partner Charles Parry of Wallingford RC compete in the 'H' event and have drawn Mosman Rowing Club, Australia in a semi-final of a four-boat event. Their heat will be between 14:00 and 15:00 on the Friday and the winners go on to race San Diego Rowing Club, USA or a Guildford/Southsea Composite between 12:00 and 13:00 on the Saturday.

Finally, Mel Gech and Lorna Cardwell are competing in women's 'B' double sculls. They have drawn a Lea/Uster composite in a quarter-final in a field of nine boats and are scheduled to race between 10:00 and 11:00 on Friday.

The club had three crews racing at Marlow Regatta this Saturday. The ragatta is held on the 2000m rowing lake at Dorney and each event consists of a time trial followed by a number of ranked finals A, B, C etc.

Reading Winners Photos

Your editor has been taking a (well-earned?) rest on the Lleyn Peninsula - hence the delay in posting this report, primarily from Steve Aquilina:

With shadows lengthening late on Fathers’ Day afternoon, eight fathers and grandfathers from Quintin took to the water to compete in the straight final of Masters F eights. Coxed by the estimable Andy Probert, the Quintin eight prepared to meet a home crew from Reading Rowing Club.

The unfortunate Roger Hine had been unable to recover from his back injury so was replaced by Tom Bishop. Despite the late call, Tom melded seamlessly into the racing lineup of: Peel (Bow), Bishop, Ferris, Lonergan, Jeffries, Meaney, Harrison, Aquilina (Str).. Cox: Probert.

Early blustery showers had given way to clouded, blue sunshine with a keen (and strengthening) following wind assisting crews off the start. Quintin were drawn on the Oxfordshire station and, with the advantage of the stream, lined up with a two-man handicap. A clean start, hitting 46½, took care of the handicap within ten strokes and over the first minute Quintin moved to a near 1 length lead. It was clear that Reading’s better rowers had travelled to Strathclyde but nonetheless Quintin set out to put on a good display for the spectators. Rounding the bend, an unprotected cross-wind did cause a couple of wobbles. However, under the stern eye of player/manager Pete Meaney, the crew had ingrained a strong rhythm off the finish and this began to assert itself through the middle of the race. Maintaining a composed 36 through the enclosures, Quintin pulled further ahead, winning easily in a time of 3:35 for the 1100m course – not the 1000m as advertised!

Medals in the bag, the eight returned to London for a well-earned Ovaltine and noggin before bed.

A couple of other Quntin successes crept under the editor's radar. These were composite crews whose entries had not been made via the club's portal to British Rowing's online entry system. They were in Masters F/G coxless pairs and Masters H/I double sculls. In the pairs Leif Jacobsen paired up with ex-QBC member Tony Hynes from Cotswold RC to haul back an 11 second age handicap and beat Bentham RC easily in a time of 4 min. 37 sec. In the double sculls Tom Bishop and Charles Parry of Wallingford RC similarly dispatched their opposition (Greenbank Falmouth), beating them by 2½ lengths in a time of 4 min. 28 sec.

The 2019 Potwinners Chart now has 32 participants.

Hot news from Reading! Our Masters F eight beat Reading Rowing Club, the verdict easily in a time of 3 min. 35 sec. This was just 3 seconds slower than the Masters C/D eights final earlier in the afternoon.

The club has three entries for Marlow Regatta, which is to be held this Saturday at Dorney Lake. We have entries in Tier 2 Eights, Tier 2 Coxed Fours and Championship Coxless Fours. The format of the regatta is to hold 1900m time trials, followed by A,B, C etc. finals.

Both our scullers were unsuccessful in Open Single Sculls at Barnes and Mortlake Regatta today. Anders Stromberg lost to Peel of King's School, Canterbury, the verdict easily, while Mark O'Brien lost to Verdon of Auriol Kensington by two lengths but beat Bermester from the same club by one length.

The Senior National Championships, due to be held at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham, this weekend have been cancelled due to lack of support. Still, it's Marlow and Henley Women's next weekend!

The club has two single scullers competing at Barnes and Mortlake Regatta this Saturday and a Masters eight competing at Reading Regatta on Sunday. On Saturday Mark O'Brien and Anders Stromberg are on opposite sides of the draw in Open single sculls. Anders has a three-boat heat against Thames Tradesmen and King's School, Canterbury at 11:57 while Mark races two scullers from Auriol-Kensington at 13:07. The winners meet in a three-boat final at 14:43.

The club had a strong entry for the two-day Metropolitan Regatta at the weekend, held on the multi-lane course at Dorney. Our eight and coxed four raced both days, while the double scull raced on Saturday and the coxless four raced on Sunday.

Saturday, 1st June

First up on Saturday was our Championship double scull. The crew composed of our captain, Mark Chatwin and Tom Solesbury. The duo had came second overall in the Pairs Head and wanted to see how much speed they had been able to pick up over the last month or so of training. Just before the race, Mark confirmed that a trestle is not designed to hold a human, when one collapsed under him, causing a bolt from the trestle to dig a grove down his back which required a quick visit to the on-site ambulance. Thanks to some basic first aid skills, the crew were still able to race and were pleased to come away with a clear length victory in Championship doubles.

12:45 Race 46: Championship Open Double Sculls - Final

Next up was the coxed four, who enjoyed a solid weekend of racing in Tier 2. In the heat on Saturday, after a slow start they found a decent mid pace rhythm to secure third position and a place in final, despite it being far from their best row. The plan for the final was to get out hard and tick over a pip or two higher than in the semi. The start was nailed and the crew led to 750m, before a sharp Royal Chester crew including a Princeton returner started to move. The boys went with moves from Nottingham and Tideway Scullers and overhauled Nottingham in the final 500, but unfortunately finished just behind Tideway Scullers. The umpire prevented the crew from doing a warm down, such was her disgust at the state of the strokeman’s haircut! It was however a good result with a number of crews overhauled since racing at Wallingford regatta. The result puts them around seventh in terms of the fours eligible for the Britannia Cup racing this regatta.

The third boat up on Saturday was the eight, which had a straight final in Open eights Tier 3 and came third, having led to 1000m but then just not having the experience to hold on to the charging crews in the final 750m.

Sunday, 2nd June

The club's Wyfold crew had to wait until Sunday for its first race, entered in Championship Coxless Fours. This crew has seen promising improvement over the last few weeks of training, however were disappointed not to be able to put this into action and ended up coming fifth in their heat. This crew will now look to move on from this result and continue to improve over the coming weeks, their next race being at Marlow Regatta.

Unfortunately on Sunday, the coxed four could not build upon their Saturday result in quite the manner hoped for. A strong crosswind at Dorney gave significant advantage to lanes 1 to 3, which Vesta in lane 2 made full use of, going out fast and staying there. Our crew, however, were disappointed to find themselves on the wrong side of a canvas behind Tideway Scullers and City of Bristol, whom they had beaten on Saturday. Nevertheless the crew has genuine speed and the coming two weeks will be crucial to ensure that speed can be sustained over the Henley course.

14:30 Race 60: Club Open Coxed Fours Tier 2 - Final

On Sunday the club and academic challenge eights events were combined, beginning with a time trial in the morning with 55 crews taking part.

Our eight showed they had learnt from their race the day before and raced a reasonable time trial which put them in the E/F semi-final - which was a strong result. Going into the semi-final the Quintin eight on paper were one of the slowest crews, however the crew put together a cracking row to win the race, beating the likes of the University of London, Warwick University, Lea and the two boats that had beaten them the previous day. This placed them in the E final, alongside boats that had been over three lengths quicker in the time trial. In the final, the Thames B crew blasted out of the blocks, with Quintin hanging on at each timing point, holding off numerous attacks from the following crews. In the end the Quintin eight finished a very respectable second, half a length down on Thames. We are looking forward to seeing this eight continue to build on this result over the next few weeks towards Henley.

The club has three entries for Saturday's events at the Metropolitan Regatta and three for Sunday. This historic regatta is nowadays held on the 2000m multi-lane course at Dorney. First to race on Saturday are Mark Chatwin and Tom Solesbury in a straight final at 12:45 of Championship Open Double Sculls against Wallingford RC, Warwick BC, UK Armed Forces and a Fulham Reach / Tideway Sculler composite. Then at 16:00 our coxed four races in a heat of the Tier 2 club event, against City of Bristol, Royal Chester, Tideway Scullers and Nottingham RC. The first three in this heat go forward to the final at 18:25. Last of our Saturday entries is our eight, victorious last Saturday at Twickenham Regatta. They have a straight final at 17:40 in Tier 3 Open Eights (Club) against UK Armed Forces, Nottingham RC, Royal Chester RC and Kingston RC.

On Sunday the eight races again, this time in a time trial for Tier 3 Open Challenge Eights (Club). This takes place at 8:42 and there are sixteen other crews in the event. The coxed four also races again, in a straight final at 14:30 for Tier 2 Open Coxed Furs (Club) against Tideway Scullers A crew, Upper Thames, City of Bristol, Vesta and Tideway Scullers B. Before that, at 10:35 our coxless four competes in a heat of Championship Open Coxless Fours against Maidenhead, Team Keane, Thames, Lea, Curlew and Univerity College, Dublin. The first three go through to the final at 12:25.

Twickenham Photos

The club competed in three events at Twickenham Regatta this Saturday. Our campaign started with a win in a heat of Open Coxed Fours at 10:24 against Reading Rowing Club - the verdict - easily. The crew then went on to race Twickenham Rowing Club in the semi-final, beating then by two loengths in a time of 3 min 24 sec. In the final they raced the University of East anglia and again won comfortably by three lengths, in a time of 3 min 15 sec.

Mark O'Brien was competing in Open Single Sculls and won his first heat over Fitzgerald of Twickenham, the verdict "easily" in a time of 3 min. 59 sec, but then lost to a sculler from Reading Rowing Club in the semi-final by three lengths with a much faster winning time of 3 min. 48 sec.

Our third entry was in Open Eights, with a straight final against the University of East Anglia. Our squad chalked up another win, beating their opposition by two lengths in a time of three minutes dead.

The club has three entries at Twickenham Regatta on Saturday. First to race for the club is our coxed four, which has drawn Reading Rowing CLub in a heat of Open Coxed Fours at 10:24. It was third time lucky for Steve Aquilina, whose first two regattas had been cancelled by a combination of strong winds and cautious officialdom. Thankfully, after a short shower, Saturday afternoon delivered some late-spring warmth and a gentle following breeze.

Entered in Masters E single sculls Steve was drawn on Surrey for his heat against E. Smith of Sons of the Thames. Run on the ebb from the Mile Post to Ranelagh sailing club, conditions were flat off the start with an increasing chop beyond Beverley Brook. After a sharp start from both scullers, Steve found himself ¾ length down after 30 strokes but managed to relax into a lively rhythm that maintained the overlap. Competitive but fair steering from both scullers kept the umpire at work, but no clashes occurred and by the end of Fulham football club Steve had worked the deficit down to ½ length. Exiting a launch wash at the Black Buoy Steve found himself on level terms and, sensing the advantage, immediately squeezed out a ½ length lead. Smith was unable to respond and Steve was able to draw out further to cross the line 2 ½ lengths ahead.

The win put Steve into the final against E. Fawsett of Barn Elms, who had won his heat by the same margin. On the same station, and in similar conditions, Steve took a ½ canvas lead off the start and squeezed this out to ¾ length by the end of Fulham football club. Maintaining a high cadence through the chop, Steve pulled out further past the moored boats, eventually winning by 2 lengths over another dogged opponent.

Steve joins the elite in this year's Potwinners Chart.

Steve Aquilina is sculling at Putney Town Regatta this Saturday. He has been entered in masters D/E single sculls and has a first race against Smith of Sons of the Thames at 17:56. The final is at 18:28. Good luck Steve!

The club had three entries for Borne regatta this weekend, with a Masters E quad scull, a Masters E single scull and an entry in Open single sculls. First to race was the quad, against next-door-neighbours MAABC and Twickenham from a bit further upriver. Unfortunately our crew encountered a technical problem in the race and were unable to continue, leaving MAABC to beat Twickenham by 1¼ lengths. William Medlicott had better fortune in Masters E single sculls, beating the sculler from Fulham Reach RC easily in the semi final. He then went on to have a close race in the final, losing to a Barn Elms sculler by one length. Finally the club chalked up a win with Mark O'Brien in Open single sculls. He beat a sculler from the American School in London easily in the semi-final and then an Ardingly sculler by 1 1/3 lengths in the final.

Mark joins last week's winners at Chiswick in the Potwinners Chart.

The club had three crews racing at Wallingford Regatta on Sunday, held, as is usual nowadays, on the Dorney 2000m. multi-lane course.

Chiswick Photos

Our home regatta took place on Saturday and got off to a good start with the first race of the day at 8:30. The weather on the day was alternately cloudy and sunny but a cold 9°C with occasional showers and a strong wind blustering to very strong. On the ebb tide the following wind allowed for some fast races but when the tide turned white-capped waves started to appear and by early afternoon the decision was taken to cancel some of the scheduled single scull and double scull races as the course was deemed to be both unsafe and unfair for these events. There were also a number of scratchings from participants boating from Hammersmith and Putney, who were unable to reach the regatta due to the roughness of the water. Nevertheless the vast majority of races were got underway and there was some good racing to be had.

Of the club's entries, Steve Aquilina, William Medlicott and Mark O'Brien didn't get to race their singles, but Geoff Peel and Jonathan Ferris rowed over to take the Masters F/G pairs pots and also competed with Steve and Leif Jacobsen in the Masters F quad sculls, unfortunately going down by 1¼ lengths to Tideway Scullers after a minor shipwreck in the rough water.

Late in the afternoon our "barflies" Masters E eight took to the water to race a Masters D eight from Kingston RC. The handicapping system gave them a 7 second start and they managed to hold off the challenge from Kingston to win by ½ length. Well done, chaps!

Brian (2nd right) at last year's Henley

We are sorry to announce that Brian Fentiman died yesterday evening after having been diagnosed with cancer some months ago.

Brian joined Quintin Boat Club in 1967. He rowed for Quintin in three eights that finished in the top 10 of the Tideway Head and in two Thames Cup semi-finals. He was in the Quintin eight that represented England in the 1968 Home Countries match and in the Quintin eight that won the National Championships in 1973. In an era when GB crews competed in the National Championships he won a bronze medal for double sculls in 1972 and a silver medal for lightweight single sculls in 1978. He was in the GB lightweight eight in the 1975 and 1976 World Championships, winning bronze and silver medals respectively.

Mike Ewing was competing in the Head of the Dart on Saturday on a course of 5km. He completed the course in 21 min. 17 sec, but was awarded a penalty of 3 minutes for taking a number of short cuts. Excluding the penalty he finished 10th overall, competing with eights, quad sculls and fours, and was the fastest single sculler.

Following on from Saturday's successes, our masters were competing on Sunday in the veterans' event. Overnight the wind had changed to a northeasterly direction and was considerably stronger and cooler. Conditions between Chiswick Bridge and Barnes Bridge and from Chiswick Eyot to Hammersmith were rough, while below Putney Bridge the conditions were near-sinking.

The club had two Masters F crews entered and Tom Bishop was stroking a Masters H Upper Thames / Quintin composite (also with Willy Almand who was in UTRC colours). Unperturbed by the difficult conditions our top 'F' crew, starting at No. 167 passed Twickenham and Putney Town 'F' crews before Barnes Bridge and overtook a further four crews before the finish, including our other 'F' crew, the "Barflies", who started at No.159. Some solid rowing through the rough water earned them the pennant for their category in a time of 21 min. 21.47 sec, 11 seconds clear of Walton's 'F' crew and 31st overall, while the Barflies' finished 133rd in a time of 23 min. 30.70 sec. Tom's composite won the Masters H pennant, finishing 71st in a time of 22 min. 19.27 sec.

Quintin Crews in the HoRR

The club had three crews competing in the Head of the River Race on Saturday. In a prevailing following breeze and on a mild sunny morning some fast times were expected and Oxford Brookes delivered, winning the race in 17 min. 11.8 sec, 3.2 seconds ahead of Leander. Our fastest crew included our captain Mark Chatwin, Alex Miller, Mike Ewing, Rob Williams, Tom Solesbury and Beks Edgar and finished 30th overall in a time of 18 min. 25.3 sec. This was an excellent result for an essentially scratch crew. The faster of our senior squad crews finished a creditable 76th equal with Agecroft's B crew in a time of 19 min. 5.5 sec, while our third eight were 124th equal with Winchester College in a time of 19 min. 47.8 sec.

The club has three crews entered for the Head of the River Race this coming Saturday (30th March) and two crews for the Veterans Head of the River on Sunday (31st March), with an interest in a composite crew with Upper Thames RC. Our starting positions on Saturday are 39, 67 and 218 and on Sunday are 159 and 167 (both Masters F category) while the composite, with Tom Bishop onboard, is in the Masters H category at number 179.

Saturday's race is scheduled to start at 11:30 GMT. We switch to British Summer Time on Sunday morning and the veterans' race starts at 13:30 BST.

Kingston HoRR Photos

The club had two masters eights racing at the Kingston Head on Saturday. The so-called "barflies", racing in the 'F' category started at number 29 in division 1, with the so-called "supervets" in the G/H handicap category two places behind at number 31. The G/H crew had a fine race, overtaking the Barflies just before Raven's Ait. Their time of 18 min. 30 sec. not only won them the G/H handicap pennant but also beat all the Masters 'F' crews and all but one of the 'E' crews. The Barflies came home in 20 min. 4sec, over half a minute ahead of the Maidenhead RC 'E' crew.

The club has two crews entered for Kingston Head of the River on Saturday - a Masters F eight and a Masters G eight. The 'F' eight has Star CLub, Walton, Twickenham, Walbrook and Galway Rowing Club as opposition while the 'G' eight is in a merged G/H category along with Broxbourne and Weybridge. Both crews are in Division 1, which is scheduled to commence at 11:00 am, the 'F' crew starting at number 29 and the 'G' cew at number 31.

The Women's Eights Head of the River Race was cancelled due to high winds.

Quintin has more than a passing interest in the Women's Head this Saturday. Lorna Cardwell will be representing the club in a Masters B eight composite with Tideway Scullers. Their starting position is 70 and the race is scheduled to commence at 11:30 am. There is some concern being expressed by the organisers regarding the high winds currently prevalent. Details of any changes to the race plan will be posted on the Women's Head website.

The club had three crews entered in Hammersmith Head on Saturday, with an interest in a further two composite crews. On a mild but blustery March afternoon the sun shone through the clouds for the duration of the race and a strong SW wind suggested some fast times were expected. Shiplake College were the fastest eight in a time of 10 min. 31.1 sec. Our1st VIII, classified in the Open Championship category finished 13th overall in a time of 10 min. 53.7 sec. The 2nd VIII, in the Open Club category were 40th overall in a time of 11 min. 15.4 sec. Our Masters F crew were the fastest in their age group but missed out the Masters F/H pennant to the Quintin / Upper Thames composite Masters H crew based on a handicap of some 43 seconds. Our crew completed the course in 11 min. 46.7 sec. while the composite clocked 11 min. 57.8 sec. Tom Bishop represented Quintin in the composite while Willy Almand was in UTRC colours.

Lorna Cardwell represented Quintin in the composite women's Masters B VIII with Tideway Scullers, a crew which won the women's Masters B/C category in a time of 12 min. 21.1 sec.

So Lorna and Tom are credited with wins in our 2018-19 Pennant Winners Chart and Tom pulls clear with five wins to date.

Prizegiving Photos

The prizegiving for the Quintin Head was held on the evening of Thursday 28th February in the club room at the boathouse. Prizes were presented by Mark Davies and about 100 people attended the ceremonies. Medals were awarded to all category winners and there were also prizes of cases of beer, supplied by Marston's Brewery, for the fastest non-academic open and women's crews. Both were won by Thames Rowing Club. The race committee also instigated junior victor ludorum prizes this year, for the fastest aggregate times in the 15, 16 and 18 years old age groups for both boys and girls. The prizes of CoxOrb Platinum kits were donated by the Quintin Hogg Memorial Fund. The boys' prize was won by Westminster School and the girls' prize by Marlow Rowing Club.

Quintin Head Photos

The 16th Quintin Head took place on a cold and windy but sunny morning of Sunday, 27th January 2019, the first crew crossing the start line pretty much at the scheduled time of 10:00 am. There were over 250 entries received, but inevitably there were some scratchings and also some crews not turning up on the day. Rumour had it that Molesey's Open Championship crew were very fast but, as things turned out they were ultimately disqualified due to an administrative error in the naming of their crew.

Imperial College's Open Championship crew were declared overall winners and also won the Open Championship category while Cambridge University Women's Boat Club similarly were the fastest women and won the Women's Championship category.

Two new prizes this year were the Quintin Hogg Memorial Prizes, one for junior men and one for junior women. These were to be awarded to the clubs that recorded the lowest aggregate times for J18, J16 and J15 (and the women's equivalents). This year the prizes were CoxOrb Platinum devices and the winners were Westminster School for junior men and Marlow Rowing Club for junior women.

Quintin entered two crews: one which fell into the Senior category, and the other a Masters G and slightly more senior crew, at least in age. The Senior crew finished 34th overall in a time of 12 min. 54.0 sec. while the Masters managed to get themselves disqualified (something to do with foul language). Most of the rest of the club's active members were busy carrying out the myriad jobs required to run such an event. Our many thanks to them and to the race officials.

This year's Quintin Head is once again fully subscribed, with 250 accepted entries. Once again Cambridge University have entered women's crews (three this year) and Oxford University Lightweights have entered two open crews. Vesta Rowing Club have entered a cracking ten crews, with further interest in a composite with Twickenham. On the junior front there are six teams competing for the Quntin Hogg Memorial Prize for boys: King's College School, Wimbledon, Norwich School, Reading Blue Coat School, St. George's College, St. Paul's School and Westminster School. The Quintin Hogg Memorial Prize for girls has three contenders: Lady Eleanor Holles School, Marlow Rowing Club and Putney High School.

With most of its members helping to run the race, Quintin has just two entries: an Open Senior eight and, in a composite with Kingston RC, a Masters G eight. They start with bow numbers 28 and 159 respectively.

As a precursor to our traditional Christmas party, our traditional "plum puddings" race was held over the usual course today from the Pink House to the club, with a scheduled start time of 11;15 am. As well as five eights from Quintin, a number of other clubs were invited to compete, producing a field of sixteen crews. The format was to start crews in an approximate estimated order of speed to keep overtaking to a minimum and after the time trial was over award prizes based on a sealed handicap. The results are given below.

So Oxford University Lightwieghts A were awarded the first prize of nine bottles of wine, Quintin Seniors B the second prize of nine Christmas puddings (actually ten as they came i a pack of ten) and third prize went to Mortlake Anglian and Alpha's mixed Masters F eight in the form of a case of small bottles of lager (locally known as "bozos"). Then the festivities began.

We are pleased to announce the introduction of the Quintin Hogg Memorial Prize:

Thanks to the Quintin Hogg Memorial Fund (Quintin Boat Club's landlord) at the 2019 Quintin Head there will be two junior victor ludorum prizes of a CoxOrb Platinum – one for boys and one for girls. For each gender the prize will go to the school or club with the fastest total time for its J18, J16 & J15 crews. If a school or club has more than one crew in an age group the time of its fastest crew will count. Crews that enter as senior even though their age would allow them to enter as junior will not count. The prize will not be awarded if only one school or club has crews in all three age groups.

Walton Small Boats Head has been cancelled in the expectation of the forecast high winds. All entry fees will be refunded.

The club has an interest in 14 entries for Walton Small Boats Head next Saturday: eight in division 1, starting at 10:00 am; five in division 2, starting at 12:00 noon and one in division 3, starting at 2:00 pm. The entries are all-QBC except for Beks Edgar's composite with Emily Walters of TSS. The starting positions are given below.

Tomorrow's race has been cancelled, based on the forecast direction and speed of the wind for tomorrow morning together with the strong likelihood of rain.

Leif Jacobsen has just returned from a visit to the west country to team up with his old Quintin crew buddy Tony Hynes in a Masters E coxless pair for Evesham Rowing Club's Avon Masters and Senior Head. This race is, unsurprisingly, rowed on the River Avon at Evesham over a distance of approximately 4000m. Leif and Tony rowed as a composite Quintin / Cotswold RC crew and we are pleased to report that they won their category. They completed the course in 18 min. 17 sec, a whole minute and 17 seconds ahead of the Warwick Boat Club Masters E pair in second place.

Leif joins our illustrious band of 2018-19 pennant winners.

The club has entered ten scullers for the Vesta Scullers Head, which is on Saturday, 1st December, starting at 10:00 am. The course this year is the traditional championship course, sculled from Mortlake to Putney on the ebb tide. Our entries and starting positions are as follows:

Charles Harrison won a Masters F single sculls pennant for the second week running today at Teddington Small Boats Head. Charles completed the course from Hampton Court to Steven's Eyot in Kingston in a time of 23 min. 39.1 sec, more than 35 seconds ahead of his closest rival.

Mike Ewing, who was also entered for the race in Open single sculls, scratched.

Charles moves into equal second place in this year's Pennant Winners Chart.

In all the anticipation leading up to the disappointment of the cancelled Turin Silver Skiff last weekend, we failed to mention that Charles Harrison was competing in the Henley Sculls Head last Saturday. Charles was the fastest Masters F single sculler, in a time of 15 min. 19 sec, 33 seconds faster than his closest rival.

This win moves Charles up into equal third place in this year's Pennant Winners Chart.

Charles is also competing in the Teddington Small Boats Head tomorrow. He has again entered for Masters F single sculls and starts at number 121 in division 1 (which commences at 10:30 am). Mike Ewing is also entered for Teddington, in Division 2 open single sculls. Division 2 starts at 2:00 pm and Mike will be wearing bib number 254.

We have been given the sad news of the death of Brian Alldridge who died on Sunday, 11th November after a short illness. Brian was captain of Quintin in 1963 and 1964 and rowed for us at Henley from 1959 to 1962. In the photograph above, Brian is with his colleagues Norman Webster, Brian Welch and Bob Slade from our 1960 Wyfold four.

His cremation will be at Mortlake Crematorium at 12:40 pm on Monday 26 November.

Blades of Remembrance

Following the suggestion from British Rowing, Mortlake Anglian Boat Club and Quintin Boat Club (among others we hope) upheld the two minutes silence at 11 o'clock this morning whilst displaying in front of their boathouses one oar for each of their members who lost his life in either of the two world wars. Quintin's act of remembrance on this 100th anniversary of the 1918 armistice consisted of twenty oars held by current members of the club.

Sadly the Turin Silver Skiff race has had to be cancelled, due to the strong currents resulting from the recent heavy rainfall in northern Italy. Let us hope that our competitors were able to put their trip to Turin to other uses.

The club has three entries for the Turin Silver Skiff, which takes place on the River Po in Turin next Sunday. The race is a time trial over 11 kilometres on an out-and-back course with a turn around a buoy at the halfway mark. Our scullers are: Tom Bishop (Masters H), starting at number 114; Mark O'Brien (Masters D), starting at number 121 and Pete Meaney (Masters F) at number 201.We wish them each a pleasant trip and a good scull. The race is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am local time.

The club had an interest in six crews for the Veteran Fours Head on Sunday - three all-Quintin crews and three composites. Alex Miller, sculling in a Star Club / Peterborough City / Leicester / Quintin composite Masters B quad, finished second overall and the fastest in category, adding to his win in Championship coxed fours the previous day. Tom Bishop's composite Masters G quad (Dart Totnes / Quintin / Wallingford) also won their category, as did the all-Quintin Masters G coxless four. Beks Edgar's composite with MAABC and TSS were the only Women's Masters A quad, but were beaten to the fastest women's slot by the Upper Thames WMas B crew.

Championship Coxed Fours Winners

The club had four crews racing in the Fours Head on Saturday. On a mild November day, but with a blustery southerly wind to contend with, particularly beyond Harrods, our Championship coxed four won their category in a time of 20 min. 7.6 sec, 11 seconds clear of Kingston RC in second place. They were the eighth coxed four overall, behind crews from Isis, Goldie, Imperial College and St. Paul's School.

We also had crews competing in the Coxed Fours Challenge, Coxless Fours Challenge and Coxless Fours Intermediate categories (whatever they may imply). Our crews' results are summarised below.

Our secretary has now ascertained that both Charles Harrison and Tom Bishop won pennants at Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on 29th September. Charles won the Masters E/F handicap and Tom won the Masters G/H/I handicap.

This extra win for Tom places him firmly at the head of this year's Pennant Winners Chart.

The club has four crews entered for the Head of the River Fours and three for the Veteran Fours Head with a 25% interest in a further three veteran crews. The Head of the River Fours is on Saturday 3rd November, starting at 12:00 noon and our starting positions are as follows:

Tom Bishop was competing once again in the Head of the Charles Regatta this Saturday and, as at last year's regatta, he kicked off the whole proceedings by heading the first division of the day, the Men's Senior Veteran Singles I and II (70+). For the second year running Tom won the division, extending his margin over Michael Tebay (formerly of CUBC but now with the U.S. Greenwich Water Club), by more than 30 seconds from last year. Tom's time was 21 min. 1.743 sec. Here are the results for the top ten scullers in the division:

Below is an updated report on the results of the Pairs Head. The organisers have had some difficulty with the timings - but the final results are now published (10th October). Our sympathies are with them - with over 450 crews it's a lot to get right.

The Pairs Head took place on Saturday on the coldest, wettest day for some time. Ironically the next day the skies were blue and the river as calm as a millpond (coaching launch washes excepted), but on the day the northerly wind gave challenging conditions from Barnes Bridge to Chiswick Eyot and it rained all afternoon. The race kicked off more or less on the scheduled start time of 3:00 pm and it is believed that most crews reached their disembarkation areas before dark.

From the eight crews containing club members, Quintin chalked up five pennant wins and two second places. Particularly outstanding was the win in Masters B double sculls by our captain, Mark Chatwin and his partner Tom Solesbury, who not only won their category pennant but finished second overall, just 0.4 seconds off being Head of the River. Also outstanding were Alex Miller and Mike Ewing in winning the Senior coxless pairs pennant, finishing tenth overall and the second fastest coxless pair. Congratulations also to Beks Edgar and Lorna Cardwell, who completed our double in Masters double sculls by winning the women's divison, and to Steve Aquilina and Ian Hyslop for their win in Masters F doubles. "On Saturday 29th September, Ian Stephenson, Huw Jones and Richard Lonergan took part in a coxed quad row along the western end of the Nice/Cannes Bay. The crew was coxed by Theo (a Mandelieu la Napoule club stalwart) with local 'Niall Bates' sitting at 2. The crew quickly found their sea legs and were therefore able to efficiently see off the local teenage girls and boys crews, ...result! However, a shoal of 'flying' herrings possibly had the edge on us.

"Note: The clubs' island race/rowing festival around Iles de St Honorat (~20km) is this coming weekend 6/7th October. Something for a QBC entry next year perhaps? www.rccannesmandelieu.com.

"Along the coast, the 'Club Nautique de Nice' http://www.cnnice.fr/ also proved to be an amazing spot for swimming, sunbathing, watching the stunning ships sail by and eating incredibly delicious food (or 'rooopas' as Richard would have it)."

As happened last year, it was a pleasant, sunny morning for this year's club sculling championship and sculling handicap race, which got underway not too long after the scheduled start time of 10:15 am. Mike Ewing led off the procession and increased his advantage to win the overall title of club sculling champion, in a time of 16 min. 56 sec. Mark Chatwin returned to competition and form, coming second a mere 20 seconds behind Mike, followed by Alex Miller in third place, a further 29 seconds behind. Mark O'Brien, finishing fourth, was the fastest in the Masters D-E category and received a bottle of wine for his troubles. Tom Bishop was fifth and the fastest Masters F+, for which he also won a bottle of wine. Steve Aquilina was sixth overall and won the sealed handicap race for the Finlayson Cup. The handicapping placed the six fastest times on handicap all within ten seconds of each other, so congratulations to the handicappers on that score.

The club's Annual General Meeting took place at midday. Full minutes will be published in due course. Bill Burbage retired as treasurer, having held the post for 21 years. Mark Chatwin presented him with a soon-to-be-illuminated blade as a memento and he was given a hefty round of applause and a vote of thanks from the floor. To honour his long-standing service to the club he was elected a vice-president.

On a bright sunny autumn morning Charles Harrison and Tom Bishop took to the waters of the upper Thames today to compete in the Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on an upstream course of some 4,250 metres. Charles was the faster of the two Masters F single scullers, beating Fricker of Maidenhead RC by 47 seconds in a time of 19 min. 14.9 sec, which was faster than all the Masters E single scullers. Tom was the faster of the two Masters H singles entries, beating his doubles partner from Wallingford RC, Charles Parry, by 67.5 seconds in a time of 19 min. 11.8 sec. This made him faster than all of Masters B, E, F and G and also half of the Masters D field.

Pennant winners for masters events were not announced on the event website, but it has been ascertained that Charles won Masters E/F and Tom won Masters G/H/I.
